Motion and Its effect on Basketball By: Kami Cloninger 4th Period 7th Grade Science December 3rd , 2015 Mrs Natalie Stricklin Isaac Newton was a brilliant scientist and brought many theories and laws to the sciences that we know today. The one we will be discussing today is the effects that Newton s Second Law of Motion (Law of Acceleration F net = m*a). This law has been used over the centuries in many forms but this paper will introduce the effects of Newton’s Second Law on basketball, although his law does affect more in our world. I’m gonna tell you the 3 laws that affect basketball. First, I m going to tell you about the second law and how it affects basketball. The first law states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion, with the same direction and speed. Motion ( or lack of motion) cannot change without an unbalanced force acting. If nothing is happening to you, and nothing does happen, you will never go anywhere. If you’re going in a specific direction, unless something happens to you, you will always go in that direction. Forever. Another part of the first law would be gravity. Gravity in basketball would be, shooting the ball and it not staying in air. The gravity is pulling the ball down. Gravity is a force of downward acceleration that is constant throughout a basketball game.
